ARTIST STATEMENT

Dotography is the umbrella term for my new pointillist works. The whole project originates from photographs that I took through a perforated plate. Each Dotography artwork is based on a photograph, be it a concrete image or an abstract color field. The graphically edited result is a work created from dots. Similar to the idea of my previous Stamp Art project, Dotography at first resolves a picture into dots. The dots are then composed to a coherent artwork. This artwork either recognizably reflects the original photograph, or it melts into an abstract work to be visually appealing.

The fascination that I experience through this creation lies within the results arising from this process of taking apart and putting back together. Each final artwork is intended to be a satisfying progress from the starting point. Following real life, in society and self-reflection, we also seek to disassemble the image of a situation or of ourselves into fragments. Then, with new information gathered, we reassemble the picture and hope to learn from the result.

This is how we improve in life. Last but not least, most of the Dotography artworks are inspired by an urban feeling that I bear from my 3.5 years in New York (especially the “Soho” series).
