Christian Awe

Christian Awe studied at the Universität der Künste in Berlin and is an internationally renowned artist with solo exhibitions across the globe. It is the urban, the pulsing life, and the people in big cities like Berlin, Ouagadougou or New York that provide him with his most vital sources of inspiration. In his new works he has been focusing his artistic work on a new series of water pictures.
Although everything is painted by hand, the canvas or paper seems dampened by real droplets, and the boundaries between reality and imagination are blurred. The droplets posit water in its purest form or are complemented by expressive “splashes of color”, covering the layers below them in rivulets or with apparently spontaneous gestures. What looks coincidentally on the first sight actually is a deliberately created composition. Awe’s works play with the impressions created up close or at a distance, color contrasts, matte vs. lustrous layers, specific impact made on the space and capturing the moment.
Christian Awe holds lectures and taught at several educational institutions and universities. He defines himself as an ambassador of a democratization of the arts and supports many social and art and education projects in Germany, the Middle East and Africa. In his works, especially in his large-scale murals, he deals with sociopolitical topics such as the current refugee situation in Europe, integration and a positive collective “we” feeling.
