Memory is the central theme of van Baren’s works, but it is also its main conceptual tool. The painting process starts with a global, abstract composition that evolves in part to an almost photorealistic figuration without any iconographic support and generally without any preparatory sketch. The subject of the painting also emerges from this transition, from blurred to sharp.
The shaping alternates interventions on the canvas with maturation phases during which each detail, observed and memorized, is later further worked, reshaped and is refined under the influence of van Baren’s past visual experiences.
