Born in Hong Kong in 1963, and raised in downtown Tokyo, I learned from an early age to challenge general conceptions about the nature of things, and have chosen to unlearn my classical Western training in drawing by way of abstraction.
I often dissect my surroundings and organize visual imagery according to an abstracted narrative.
My work takes time to create and has begun to supersede the limited frame of traditional drawing in measures of the transcendental funnel from eastern perspectives of visual art through, between and back again to western conceptions.
While drawing or painting directly onto paper or canvas pinned to the walls of my Los Angeles studio, I have a sense that my work is part of the larger environment. In there, here and now I remind the viewer of the conversations delivered to us by Hokusai, Sally Gabori, Cy Twombly and feed their subconscious with layers of perceptions.
In linking these lines, I hone the gestural movements of my work with the Japanese calligraphy I learned as a young child.
