Mathematician turned visual artist, Helena Kauppila is deeply fascinated by the mechanisms of learning and of generating knowledge and action. Combining perspectives, and especially creating spaces for conversations and interactions, lies close to her heart. Kauppila holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the California Institute of Technology, and a Ph.D. in Mathematics from Columbia University. She is the recipient of the Reginald Marsh and Meyers Marsh scholarship at the Art Students League of New York, where she studied under Larry Poons and Anita Steckel. Her work explores individuality in that she believes art has the capacity to create spaces in which a close awareness of the self is more likely. Kauppila currently lives and works in Berlin, Germany.
